Day 1 - Getting Aquainted

We met Tessema this morning!  We got to the orphanage at about 9:00 and they led us to a waiting room, saying that they would call us in one at a time to meet our kids.  (We had to take turns because they videotape these meetings for us.)  Then we sat there, just cooling our heels and staring at each other for half an hour.  Finally our guide came back and called us in first!  We followed her her through a courtyard full of adorable toddlers and nice videographers, up some stairs and into a bright, sunny room full of babies.  Tessema shares a room with eleven other little ones, so we didn't see him right away.  We waded through kids to a nanny who was beckoning to us and holding the cutest kid in the room.

Tessema is very sweet and shy, and quite attached to one of his nannies.  She kept trying to hand him to us, but he was having none of it.  Meanwhile, all the other kids were swarming us, beaming and climbing onto our laps.  We ended up taking Tessema outside away from the action (and the nanny!), where he warmed up to us somewhat and even snuggled into me a bit towards the end of our visit.  They let me feed him, and he seemed to like me better at that point.  We had to leave for lunch, but went back again in the afternoon and Tessema was in a much better mood.  He let us hold him, and he sat on our laps, but we have yet to coax a smile out of him.  We will try again tomorrow!

I had hoped to attach new pictures today, but we're not allowed to take photos in the orphanage.   We get to take him to the guesthouse on Monday, so I'll take a ton of pictures then!

What a special day for the three of you. I'm glad you had some 3-some time away from the busy nursery. It's good JT has a close bond with his Nanny for now, because that shows you he can develop a bond with another person. Just think, over a brief stretch of time, JT will transfer those emotional ties to you & your family! YEA! Sounds like there's a natural flow to the way things are going. I love reading about your time in Africa...yesterday, as I was driving, the radio played the song "Africa" by ToTo & it gave me thoughts of you there. Love, Connie

Only you and Paul could wait this long!!
Now that he's starting to warm up, do you feel a bit like the round pen exercises? (only I would ask!!!)

Praise God!! How awesome it must have been to hold the child you have been waiting for so long...the child God picked out for you and guided you to. What a day of blessings and praise. And how wonderful you get to have a video record. Just so exciting! I bet this next day will be even more rewarding. love you-Shanna

We love checking up on the blog. It sounds like everything is going really well and that Tessema is a very sweet little boy. You are always able to get a smile out of Nate and Matt (and usually a belly laugh) so I am sure Tessema will be grinning with pleasure when he sees you very soon. Can't wait to welcome him home next weekend.
